Our first stop is at Mount Azazel, the sacred hilltop where, according to tradition, every year on Yom Kippur a scapegoat carrying the sins of the people was cast off a cliff. Driving through the off-road territory inhabited mainly by Bedouin tribes, we’ll see their tents and animals. We’ll also visit an ancient water cistern, so important for desert farmers, and still in use today.
Our next stop (with a herbal tea and cookies stop...) is the Mar Saba monastery, almost a secret for travelers in Israel because of the relative difficulty in arriving at the site. The hidden but huge monastery, founded over 1,500 years ago, remained one of the oldest inhabited monasteries in the world.
An optional visit at Nabi Musah (Muslim holy site) completes the tour with a touch at each of the three monotheistic religions.
Lunch.
Lookout on Jericho from Mitzpe Yericho (a Jewish settlement), and/or visit to Eretz Beraishit (not included in the fees), and/or lookout on St George's monastery in Wadi Qelt. There's an option of hiking (on a hot day even swimming in an oasis spring) in Wadi Qelt, but the nicest spot is a nature reservation and therefore costs 29/15 NIS entry per adult/child...
